Eco Factor: Shipping container home has low environmental impact.

Port-a-bach” is a compact home designed specifically for those who love living a nomadic life. Designed by Cecille Bonifait and William Giesen of Atelier Workshop, the house just needs just 40-square meters of flat ground and six concrete pads that serve as foundations.

The houses can be kept completely off-grid by making use of water harvesting technologies for water and photovoltaic panels for electricity. In accordance with its name “Bach,” which means “Bachelor Pad”, the house is perfect for a couple of nomads. The house can be easily transported on a standard truck and placed wherever one wants. The designers believe that such houses are also perfect for a disaster situation, where a container ship can carry thousands of such homes to disaster-hit areas.

The Dark Side:

The basic units start from $55,000 and the price only increases as more and more luxuries are attached to the nomadic house. At that price we don’t expect the houses to be used in case of any disaster, especially in times of economic crisis.
