Eco Factor: CFC-free inhalers cost more but prove green.

The New Year will see all albuterol inhalers used in the U.S. getting eco-friendly and a bit more expensive. The ozone damaging CFCs used in these inhalers will be replaced by hydroflueroalkane (HFC). In the process of getting green, the cost of these inhalers will also increase from about $10 for a CFC one to about $60 for a HFC one.

The medicine won’t just taste differently, but it needs weekly cleaning of the inhaler hole to prevent congestion. Patients who are averse to this change will be allowed to use the CFC inhaler until 2011.

The Dark Side:

This change will not be pleasant to everyone. Some might not be able to give up the old medicine even after 2011. Moreover, the increased cost of the inhalers will definitely raise some frowns.
