Eco Factor: Solar-powered floating homes.
Researchers estimate that once the glaciers are gone, many metropolitan cities across the world will be submerged in water, making life miserable. No, we are not here to again talk about ingenious ways to save the glaciers, but we just want to make sure you don’t sleep in a soaked bed once that happens. UK-based Kingsley Architects have designed a modern, low-carbon living space that seems inspired by a camper van.
Dubbed the SolarHome, the 75m2 homes won’t be as spacious as the home you are currently living in, but will keep you floating on solar-power for a period of six to 12 months, before you’ll have to come back to shore for supplies. The design feature off-the-grid solar living while floating on water all through the year. The home can be operated in two modes – Docked Mode, which requires you to connect to the infrastructure for power and supplies and a Self-Sufficient Mode, which enables you to run off-the-grid for a year.
The Dark Side:
The designers don’t mention the propulsion system or the way by which these modern living spaces will be kept afloat. However, with the environment already in dire conditions, designs like the SolarHome could well be developed soon.
