Eco Architecture: UK’s greenest hospital to offset 20,000 tons of CO2 annually

Eco Factor: £300 million sustainable hospital design.

Construction on the £300 million Mittal Children’s Medical Center has commenced. The hospital, which will be UK’s greenest hospital, will offset a total of 20,000 tons of CO2 annually, which is equivalent to the typical footprint of 2000 people living in the UK. The hospital will comprise two buildings connected together, which will offer 30,000 square meters of available space.

In order to minimize the amount of energy required, the building’s façade will be built with transparent materials, which will maximize the amount of sunlight to illuminate the interiors and will also minimize solar gain internally. Apart from illumination, the transparent façade will create a welcoming atmosphere for patients, staff and family members. The hospital will depend on natural ventilation, which does aid patient recovery. Along with this, the architects plan to use natural paints and linoleum and low VOC materials all over the building.

The Dark Side:

The building does not generate any electricity, which we did expect in a building that costs over £300 million.
