Eco Factor: Zero-emission sports car powered by fuel cells.
The Ariel Atom is one true sports car with race bred construction and components. But when the race to go green is in full swing with the carmakers, Ariel has its own plans with the open-top Atom sports car. The lightweight sports car manufacturer is considering plans to build an all-new alt-powered sports car. The future car have a standard engine, but it would still break new ground in the same way that the Atom first did, Ariel boss Simon Saunders told PistonHeads. Saunders further said that the new minimalist supercar will be a departure from the exposed skeletal structure. They have plans to go for new technologies, such as fuel cells and electric motors.
But there will be no compromise on the company’s key principles of lightweight construction and amazing accelerative performance. Saunders said, “We don’t want to take on the established manufacturers. We will use our knowledge from building the Atom to produce a car for a totally new segment.”
The new eco-friendly Ariel sports car might take years to see the light of the day. For now, Ariel is planning to roll out a new version of the Atom, equipped with a 2.4-liter, 500bhp V8 engine. They are also thinking of returning to the roots of the Ariel name with the production of a motorcycle.
