Eco Factor: Nissan LEAF gets powered by an electric engine for zero-emissions.
Nissan’s much-awaited all-electric hatchback has finally appeared at the company’s super-green headquarters. The car, dubbed LEAF, was unveiled by the company’s CEO Carlos Ghosn in the presence of former Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi. The compact-five door hatchback is powered by Li-ion batteries which fuel a small but powerful AC motor.
The car’s powerhouse sits neatly under its floor, which collectively add up to a 24KWh capacity and generate a power output of 90KW. The electrons are fed into the cars 80KW AC motor. The company claims that the car will be able to travel up to 100 miles on a single charge. Charging time will depend on the charger, which is 16 hours on a standard household plug and 30 minutes on a fancy 3-phase charging station.
Details on the cost are still hidden, but the company states that when available in 2010, the car’s cost will be very competitive with comparable internal combustion cars, which will be lowered in due time as the driver won’t have to visit the gas station.
