Eco Factor: Ecofriendly cellphone charger harnesses kinetic energy for a green recharge.
Students at the Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS) in East Java capital Surabaya have come up with a prototype charger that can juice your cellphone every time you move. The kinetic energy charger can be clipped onto a belt and convert motion energy into electricity.
The device comes packed in a clear fiberglass box and features a dynamo and magnet built into a coil. The system produces induction current, which is then stored in a built-in battery before being transferred to the cellphone. The developers hope that the prototype can be used by the military to charge their communication devices on the move.
Kinetic chargers can harvest body movement to generate up to 150W of power, which can run a computer or power about 70 smartphones. Moreover, during tests, where the wearer was walking at a speed of 4kph, the charger was able to completely recharge a cellphone battery in just 5 minutes.
