Eco Factor: Thin-film solar cell with an efficiency of 9.6 percent.
IBM has announced the developed of a new solar cell, which according to the company is the world’s most efficient thin-film photovoltaic cell that has been made using earth-abundant materials. The solar cell boasts an efficiency of 9.6 percent, which is 40 percent more than its previous incarnations.
The solar cell is composed of copper, tin, zing, sulfur and/or selenium, which can aid the cell’s wide production. While other commercial versions have achieved 11 percent efficiency, they have been made using costly compounds including copper indium gallium selenide and cadmium telluride.
