Eco Factor: Low-emission concept car powered by a hybrid engine.
Kia Motors America unveiled the Ray plug-in hybrid concept car during a press conference at the 2010 Chicago Auto Show. The design team has put in a lot of effort to better the vehicle’s aerodynamics by giving it a longer tail. Moreover, the vehicle’s four-inch lower roof also increases its efficiency.
The Kia uses a direct injected inline-four in combination with a continuously variable transmission. The 1.4-liter engine of the Kia Ray is supplemented by a 78KW electric motor. The company claims that the vehicle offers a 202.3mpg equivalent while driving in electric-only mode and 77.6mpg with the gas engine turned on as well.
The Ray also features specially coated glass that helps keep the interiors cool, while roof-top photovoltaic cells help power the climate control system.
