Eco Factor: Zero-emission bus to be powered by hydrogen fuel cells.
BAE Systems is planning to develop a zero-emission bus for Southern California regional transit agency, SunLine Transit, under a project to demonstrate the commercial feasibility of fuel cell technology. The company will be serving as systems integrator to deliver the vehicle to SunLine transit in an effort funded by the Federal Transit Administration, CALSTART, California Air Resource Board and California South Coast Air Quality Management District.
The fuel cell bus will not use fossil fuel and will demonstrate technology that can reduce dependence on diesel fuel and CNG. The bus is scheduled to be delivered in December 2011. The bus will make use of a fuel cell module supplied by Ballard Power Systems that will be combined with BAE Systems’ propulsion and power management systems.
The 40-foot transit bus will be based on BAE Systems’ HybriDrive propulsion technology that has been in daily revenue service on buses in New York and other cities since 1998.
