Eco Factor: Energy-efficient house gets powered by renewable solar energy.
The Tongji House is the creation of students at the Tongji University in China that runs entirely on energy harvested from the sun. The sustainable house carries 317 photovoltaic panels in its roof and walls and has been created using bamboo, a material that is common in homes in Southern China.
The Tongji House will compete in Solar Decathlon 2010, scheduled to be held in Madrid later this month. The Chinese prototype home generates 10,972KWh of electricity, which is stored in batteries for nearly 10 days of autonomy.
The house also includes several energy-saving systems including vacuum insulation panels and a new system that allows energy storage in phase change materials. The house will compete with 16 other prototypes in the Solar Decathlon competition to be held in Madrid.
