Eco Factor: CO2 emissions can be reduced by lowering speed limit.
A study by the Dutch consultancy CE Delft shows that CO2 emissions could be trimmed down by 30% in the Netherlands if the highway speed limits are set to 80 kilometer per hour. This reduction in the speed would also help in reducing air pollution, noise nuisance, congestion and traffic safety.
The NGO Milieudefensie that initiated this research in the Netherlands says that the results of the study could vary in other countries. The researchers expect at least 2.8 million tons of CO2 for passenger cars, while delivery vans could cut down carbon emission to 0.2 million tons. It is also expected that lower speed limits might shift people from private cars to public transport, which could further reduce carbon emissions.
