Eco Factor: Sustainable home with green roofs and photovoltaic system.
What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you think of a flood? Well, countless images of damaged vegetation, broken vehicles, ruined houses and homeless people. To give shelter to those without a roof over their heads, buildingstudio proposed affordable infill housing. The design suggests a home that intertwines into the already established neighborhoods.
Taking inspiration from a common New Orleans house type, the house stands three stories high with the ground level typically a common courtyard. This innovative prototype features habitable spaces that are enclosed on all sides with screened porches that allow ample amounts of light in.
There is provision for green features like a green roof to cool and control heat gain, tall ceilings with fans for air movement, louvered shutters for sun control and privacy, solar hot water heating and a photovoltaic system. Side galleries and porches offer a beautiful garden view. In places where there is less width space, the “single-barrel” i.e. one unit wide prototype is used, while where space permits the “double-barrel shotgun” i.e. two units wide concept can be used.
