Eco Factor: Sustainable theater to be built using recycled materials.
Berlin-based architects Köbberling and Kaltwasser have started constructing UK’s first theater made from recycled materials. Dubbed the Jellyfish Theater, the site will be built from scrap donated by the public and other unwanted items the project team salvaged from building sites.
Theater company The Red Room has commissioned two plays for the space –Oikos, by Simon Wu and Protozoa by Kay Adshead. Currently only a few days into its construction, the Jellyfish Theater will take six to eight weeks to complete, during which time members of the public will be invited to donate materials and volunteer to help with the construction. In July the theater will be showcased as part of London Festival of Architecture.
The team is also proposing a fuel cell system to power the theater. The project entitled The Oikos Project will use the Jellyfish Theater in July and August as an exhibition space, before the plays are performed later in August.
