The Swiss team behind the Solar Impulse HB-SIA solar-powered aircraft has made a new record by flying over 24 hours powered exclusively by its onboard photovoltaic array. The airplane flew through the night in a record breaking attempt and set the record for the longest solar flight at 26 hours and nine minutes.

The team also set a record for altitude by flying at 8564m above sea level. The pilot managed to land the super-size, super-light aircraft with more energy in its onboard battery pack than what he started with. The 3500lb carbon fiber aircraft hit a top speed of 68 knots, while its average speed was 23 knots. Hindered by the limitations of current electricity storage technology, the team is planning to circumnavigate the globe in 2012.
