Eco Factor: Sustainable house generates renewable solar energy.
Currently under construction on the Big Island of Hawaii, the Hi’ilani Eco House, aims to serve as a living laboratory for implementation of the latest technologies in design, engineering, architecture and materials, culminating in a carbon neutral dwelling.

The truly off-grid dwelling generates all the energy, water, cooling and ventilation demands. Created by Robert Mechielsen of Studio RMA, the project features use of advanced techniques to lower energy consumption and ensure optimal environmental integration.

Designed with Structural Concrete Insulating Panel (SCIP) technology, the house features inverted butterfly roofs that act as a water catchment system while maximizing solar energy collection. The fully off-grid house is equipped with a 10KW solar photovoltaic system that generates all the energy the home requires.

Moreover, systems to regulate natural cooling and ventilation have been incorporated to further reduce energy demands. The house is being built to comply with the LEED for Homes certification process.
