Eco Factor: Redesigned wind turbine triples the production of wind energy.
Professor Yuji Ohya at Japan’s Kyushu University has unveiled redesigned wind turbine dubbed as “Wind Lens” that can triple the amount of energy generated by offshore turbines. Exhibited at the Yokohama Renewable Energy International Exhibition 2010, the new design replaces the traditional triple blade design with a honey comb structure.
The turbine works on the similar principle as magnifying glass that intensifies light from the sun. In this case the turbine has a hoop which is an AKA a brimmed diffuser that “magnifies” the wind power and the turbine is rotated by the wind captured from the loop. Interestingly, each Lens measuring 112 meters in diameter, can provide enough energy for an average household.
