Eco Factor: Self-sustainable development is a hybrid of both natural and artificial systems.

Designers over at Plasma Studio are developing a self-sustainable landscape in Xi’an in China that will provide a harmonic relationship between the city’s wondrous past and its exciting future. The Flowing Gardens being from a single line, traveling through the East and West Hills and over the lake, while extending into many sinuous paths, creating a network of intermingling circulation and rejuvenation.

The proposal comprises a 5000sqm exhibition hall, a 4000sqm greenhouse and a 3500sqm gate building sitting in a 37 hectare landscape that will house the flower fair in 2011 and a park for Xi’an city as legacy. The fair will open in 2011, receiving approximately 200,000 visitors a day.

The project proposes the development of a hybrid system which is a blend of both natural and artificial processes. The development, which focuses on water conservation, will bring together a synergy of waterscapes. Rainwater will be collected and channeled into wetland areas, where natural plants and reed beds will be used to purify and store water.

The development will also include several gray and black water treatment facilities. After the fair is over, the gardens transform into a sustainable system that is maintenance free, allowing the entire development to become a new model within the horticulture industry.

The Gate building will be created at the junction of public meeting spaces, landscape and circulation. One enters the site through the gate along the major axis of the Flowing Gardens, creating a distinctive framed view of the entire development.
