Eco Factor: Model ecological campus uses innovative wastewater strategy.
American firm BNIM has designed an educational facility to educate visitors, staff and local community on innovative wastewater strategies. Known as the Omega Center for Sustainable Living, the facility contains a classroom, laboratory, water garden, and a constructed wetland which supplies all of its own energy needs.
The project uses an eco machine to biologically treat waste water thereby refurbishing the existing waste water disposal system for the entire 195 acre Rhinebeck Campus. Omega plans to use the entire setup as a model ecological campus that uses treated water for garden irrigation along with a grey water recovery system. Other than this the sustainable building design would be using photovoltaic power, supplemented by geothermal heating along with natural ventilation as part of its cooling strategies.
