Eco Factor: Hydrogen-powered car create its own hydrogen fuel using the sun.
Until now, we have seen many hydrogen-powered vehicles, but none that creates its own fuel. But a hydrogen-powered 1994 Toyota Tercel by an agriscience professor from Middle Tennessee State University promises just that. Christened as “Forces of Nature,” this green car will create its own hydrogen fuel using the sun. Using hydrogen extracted from an onboard water supply using solar power, the car will attempt to complete an over 500 miles journey from Blacksburg, Virginia to Little Rock, Arkansas on November 1.
The Forces of Nature incorporates a solar collector that generates electricity, which in turn runs the vehicle’s solid polymer electrolysis unit. The separation of the water into its hydrogen and oxygen components takes place in this unit, after which the hydrogen is stored in two 500-gallon tanks, where it is compressed at 6,000psi. This hydrogen is then manually transferred to the car’s dual 4.2kg fuel tanks, which are used to run the motor.
The car is a good example of energy self-sufficiency and renewability. This environment savior will complete its one-day run by traveling at an average speed of 58mph. The MTSU scientist claims that his green coupe offers a range of 336 miles. If his attempt is a success, he plans to drive across the U.S. using just 10 gallons of gasoline, next year.
