Talking about renewable source of energy, the list that occurs to us is wind, water and sun. But mechanical energy is another renewable source of energy that has been in use since time immemorial, either with the use of animals or humans themselves. Here is one such example of mechanical energy used not to plough the fields or to pull a wagon but to charge your laptop. This method developed by the students of MIT, involves pedaling to charge up a laptop. So you don’t need to allot time for your workouts. Squeeze it in while you check your emails the first thing in the morning. The seat is adjustable and the laptop can be pushed back or pulled forward according to one’s convenience. The wheel is covered to prevent your garment from getting caught while pedaling. In a test drive, a team member Figari was able to produce 50 watts of energy while checking his emails. This is considered to be good enough to charge a laptop. With no electricity charges, environmentally friendly, keeps your laptop working and accounts for some physical workout, I’m sure no one would want to let it slip. Hats-off to the students of MIT for this is not just an innovation but a culmination.
