These strange contraptions are Alon Alex Gross’s fog and dew collectors – designed specifically to collect drinking water in arid and semi-arid regions. The concept of dew collection or fog harvesting is not new – these models are just improvements on the old ones by incorporating super-light materials and internet connectivity.
The fog collector uses a 2 meter mesh surface which can collect up to 10 liters of water in 24 hours. It can be used at any time of day and needs to be facing the direction of the wind for maximum effect.
The dew collector weighs just 400 grams but can collect up to 1.5 liters of drinking per night. It uses a special foil to collect the dew drops and then stores the water in a removable pouch. The foil is fragile and is liable to be destroyed by the harsh conditions it was designed for, spurring its designer, Gross, to incorporate sensors that detect atmospheric changes and open and close the collecting apparatus accordingly. It also is compatible with a large number of internet programs making it easier to access. With these devices on hand, drinking water scarcity will be a thing of the past.
