Wal-Mart, the mega US retailer plans to go organic with its food, the New York Times reported. Hope with this, the US consumers will have a greater availability of organic food and that too at marked decreased prices.
But, how would it effect the organic market is a bigger perspective? Will the initiative squeeze the organic farmers out? It people, relying largely on the retailer, start purchasing more of organic food, will it lower the production standards of organic food? Or, will it undermine the organic farming’s environmental benefits?
These factors are to be considered and analyzed after the organic market gets into the Wal-Mart outlets.
