Volitan – A futuristic eco friendly sailboat promises uber-green sailing

volitan 1 djBCK 5784 Since we have been chasing most of the eco-friendly sail boats since some time now, its time to bring one more avant-garde green conceptual boat to your notice. Designed by Hakan Gürsu and Sözüm Doganof Turkish design firm Designnobis Studio, this lightweight, futuristic boat cuts the waters using solid sails, wind power and solar energy. Dubbed as Volitan, which literally means flying fish, this 105-foot water mammoth, is crafted from a composite of carbon fiber and epoxy resin and covered in carbon-foam lamination. Roll over more a descriptive video……

Its two solid, solar-panel-covered sails, which extend from the ship’s body like wings catch wind when the sailing is good, and deliver electricity to the two 200-horsepower electric motors that propel the ship when the wind won’t cooperate. Controlled and optimized by a networked computer, the wings rotate and tilt to track both the sun and wind. The energy they harvest is stored in conventional marine batteries that sit at the bottom of the boat’s centerboard and act as ballast. volitan2 ulGOj 5784 And if the sea goes rough, the boat’s wings fold up against the boat and Volitan still cruises gracefully as it is engineered to operate in up to 60 knot winds. Here the lower wings that contain a couple of DC motors help to stabilize the boat. However when this green sea beast docks, these two stabilizer wings tuck away. Volitan also boasts of few more feathers on its hat as it was honored first prizes at the Transportation and Nautical/Boats categories at the 2007 International Design Awards. Wonder when this ‘flying fish eco boat’ comes to fruition! Via Popsci
