Venom for sustainability – Bee venom and mini fuel cells in harmony

It’s good to see what’s happening around the world with respect to the changing environment and the need for alternate source of energy. Things which were once considered eerie are now practiced to achieve the desired outcome. Experiments like – harnessing power from ant bites and bee stings! A company called Tekion has worked out how to use the malice from ant bites and bee stings in a mini fuel cell that can be used to charge up gadgets like mobile phones, digital cameras, iPods or any other electronic device anywhere, anytime.

What has venom to do with technology? These biting ants and bee sting release ‘formic acid‘ as venom (source of defense) and the same is used to run the miniature fuel cells used by the above mentioned company (Tekion’s recharger, which contains a miniature fuel cell that runs on formic acid — the same chemical emitted as venom by biting ants and bees — is about the size of a BlackBerry and should retail for under $100). The reason being that formic acid (in fuel cells) provide more concentrated power than other fuels, allowing it to be integrated into small electronic devices.
