Vault to Secure 2 Million Seeds in the North Pole

seeds of the apocalypse

Just 1000 kilometers from the North Pole, can the future of humanity be found? It’s on the mountain on a freezing-cold island. It’s an isolated vault, or the room can be called as ‘doomsday vault’. But, why will it be built and why here? Seeds. Yes, it is to hold around 2 million seeds, representing all known varieties of the world’s crops.

We all know that nuclear war, climate change, terrorism, rising sea levels, earthquakes – all these factors can destroy crops. The purpose of the vault is to safeguard the world’s food supply against these and the ensuing collapse of electricity supplies.

The vault will cast $3 million. But, doesn’t it seem a remarkably cheap price to safeguard the world’s food supply? It will be built deep inside a sandstone mountain lined with permafrost on the Norwegian Arctic island of Spitsbergen. With meter-thick walls of reinforced concrete, the vault will be protected behind two airlocks and high-security blast-proof doors. “This will be the world’s most secure gene bank by some orders of magnitude,” says Fowler.
