Eco Factor: Energy-efficient house gets powered by renewable solar energy.

The Department of Energy has just recently approved Team Tennessee Living Light’s Request for Proposal and the Competitive Stage Schematic Design for the 2011 Solar Decathlon. UT’s zero-energy house, dubbed as Living Light, highlights the latest innovations in the areas of solar energy, energy efficiency, building materials, information technology and home design.

The zero energy house prototype, proposed to be erected in the UT Institute for Smart Structures, will be a combined venture of the College of Architecture + Design at the University of Tennessee (UT) and the College of Engineering and Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). At the Solar Decathlon 2011, 20 universities will aim to create an 800sf solar-powered house on the National Mall in Washington, DC.
