Eco Factor: Flexible solar-powered shades and tents designed for military purposes.

The U.S. Army is testing a host of flexible, portable and lightweight solar-powered shades and tent-like technologies, which have been designed to allow units to deploy transferable and exportable electrical power that can charge batteries, computers and other electronic gear without needing a fossil-fuel powered generator.

The products are based on the use of flexible photovoltaics to produce electricity, thus eliminating the need to haul generators and large amounts of fuel. The system is being claimed to be ideal to power batteries ensuring that night vision goggles and computers are powered up.

The Army is currently testing three different technologies that include Power Shade, TEMPER Fly and QUADrant. The TEMPER Fly is able to generate about 800W of power, the QUADrant is a smaller variant of TEMPER Fly and can be used to generate about 200W of power and the Power Shades range in size and are capable of generating up to 3KW of exportable electrical power.
