Eco Factor: Electric car to be powered by solar energy.
A team of students at the University of Virginia earlier converted a Honda accord to run clean on electricity and now they’re trying to better their ride with renewable energy. Students in James Durand’s mechanical engineering class will now be fueling their 1994 Accord with solar power.
The team is working with U.Va. Facilities Management to install photovoltaic panels near the vehicle’s parking space to generate electricity to offset some of what the car consumes. The panels are being installed atop a bus kiosk, from where renewable energy will be transferred to the garage.
The installation features six 200W photovoltaic cells and will generate up to 1320KWh of electricity each year. Considering that the car consumes about 3100KWh of electricity annually, the solar installation will be able to provide about 33 percent of the energy.
