University of Oregon Graduate awarded Fellowship for eco friendly building design

whittier organic food center towers 1 Daniel Toole, a student at the University of Oregon was recently awarded the prestigious Caven Family Traveling Fellowship 2011 for his impressive design for towers with an ecologically conservative design, to drastically reduce carbon footprints. The award, in addition to being a great honor, also provides the winners (who must be 35 or below) with a generous $10,000 to pursue their research by travelling across the world to further their education. Toole’s idea, the “Whittier Organic Food Center” was as follows – the concept involved inversion or “flipping” of greenhouses vertically to harness wind, solar and hydroelectric power in a virtual farmer’s market, greatly reducing the ecological cost. The judges unanimously picked Toole’s entry, decreeing it a “comprehensive solution” to many of the problems faced in the modern age to reduce our carbon footprint. Toole isn’t resting on his laurels and basking the glory, though. He has already planned to put his $10,000 to good use by travelling to Scandinavia, Portugal, Italy, Spain, Greece and Turkey to further his study and perhaps bring his ideas a step closer to being implemented. whittier organic food center towers 2 whittier organic food center towers 3 Via: Bustler
