Unique underwater device & acoustic tags to study fish movements

of some reef fishThe movements of some reef fish off the Tasman Peninsula in Tasmania’s south-east will now be monitored by a unique system — 33 underwater listening electronic devices placed on the sea floor off Pirates Bay. The devices are placed by the Tasmanian Aquaculture and Fisheries Institute.

Acoustic tags have been implanted in the fish, which will send out a signal to be picked up by various receivers. This will allow scientists to examine their movements. The device is three buoys and sits in the water. They triangulate the fish’s exact position within a couple of meters, sending that information via a radio signal to a base station.

And this helps scientists look and plot a particular fish’s movement on the computer screen on near real time.
