UK Police to induct Mitsubishi i-MiEV as their first electric patrol car for non-emergency duties

Whenever we think of those dramatic high speed police chases, the bantam Mitsubishi i-MiEV certainly doesn’t come to our mind. But where this electric hatchback lacks in raw power, it does make up for it by its zero emission green technology. And that is what the Thames Valley Police, based in the South-West of England have taken into account, when they decided for the i-MiEV for ‘non emergency’ police duties around the Milton Keynes city center.

Powered by a 16 kWh Li-ion battery (with 88 cells is placed under the base floor), the electric vehicle has range of around 100 miles (160 km), and a top speed of 80mph (130kmph). This in effect certainly increases the total fuel economy along with accentuating upon the environment friendly scheme of things. Thus some degree of burden is lessened on the pockets of the taxpayers; but again one shouldn’t expect the i-MiEV to catch those determined robbers on their more powerful gas guzzling contraptions.

Dave McDonald, Chiltern’s Transport Fleet Manager said:

On the principle that we are all in this together we will work with customers, suppliers and other stakeholders to radically reduce and eventually eliminate our fleets’ dependency on fossil fuels. The purchase of the Mitsubishi i-MiEV for use by Thames Valley Police in Milton Keynes not only signals Chiltern Transport Consortium’s commitment to this endeavour but also promotes electric vehicles as a viable option for other fleets and individuals.
