Turkey is planning to build one of the biggest wind farms and would effectively increase the amount of electricity by wind power. This project will be completed by 2009 and have a capacity of 135 megawatts in Southeast Turkey.
General Electric Energy will supply approximately 52 brand new turbines having capacity of 2.5 MW. According to the communication leader of GE energy, Frank Hoersting, “Turkey is a fast growing and very interesting market for the wind business of GE.”
Major highlights of wind turbines are 3 rotor blades and functional even at a low wind speed of 19mph. although, Turkish wind power has great potential, still it is enclosed within Aegean, Mediterranean and Black Sea. In the year 2006, approximately 19 MW capacity of wind power is being installed.
Recently, vice president of world wind energy association, Tanay Sydky Uyar stated Turkey as having greatest potential for renewable electricity from various sources, such as wind, sun and geothermal. He also made estimation for installation of wind capacity of 100,000 MW electricity.
According to him, “Wind power could supply Turkey’s electricity needs twice over within five to ten years if the government had the political will to develop this sector.” He blamed government for giving slow licenses.
He also stated that Turkey has great capacity or solar as well as geothermal energy. He added, “We have terrific geographic conditions for solar and wind power in Turkey. Exploiting it is already economically and technically possible, but the problem is that the government favors fossil fuels and nuclear energy.”
He explained that more efforts are required for appropriate usage of energy. In Turkey, share from renewable energy are quite little. Year 2006 marked the installation of biomass capacity of approximately 35MW and15 MW geo thermal energy.
