Toshiba Protege R500, intelligently green with power saving SSD

Toshiba has gone ‘Green’ with its new Portege R500 laptop that the company claims can run 8-hours without a recharge. The secret to the amazing battery backup is the use of Solid State Drives rather than that energy eating HDDs. Solid State Drives have no moving parts and use the same technology that is used in your thumb drive. No moving parts also mean they require half as much power as a traditional hard drive.

The Toshiba Portege R500 comes with a 64 GB SSD capacity and a 12′ trans-reflective backlit LED screen to give you good contrast even if you are sitting in the sunshine. With all this under its hood the Toshiba Portege R500 weighs just 800 grams.

Reviewers are still slamming Toshiba for failing to build in a mobile broadband antenna in the notebook. Maybe Toshiba is responding to the claims laid down by the German Federal Government that workplaces should avoid the use of WLAN to minimize the potential risks of exposure to the radiation caused by its use. However, industry leaders have stated that WLAN is less associated with radiation than cell phones.
