The scenic town of Alcoy in eastern Spain has always been famous for those Moros y Cristianos (Moors and Christians) festivals. But now the time has also come for the town to be well known on the green side of affairs, because three of the entries of this year’s eminent Shell Eco-marathon come from the Alcoy municipality.

The Eco Marathon is famous for its exhibition of futuristic vehicles with nigh sensational fuel economies (for example just in the previous year, a team from St. Joseph La Joliverie reached a whopping 6,973.4 mpg or 2,964.7 km/liter mileage). This time the competition is to be held in the German town of Lausitz, and as usual teams will be gathering around from all parts of Europe. And among this grand host of participants, there will be three Spanish teams from the medieval-esque town of Alcoy alone.

The University of IES Cotes Baixas will be represented by the advanced Dimoni 2.0 vehicle. Constructed from a composite of sturdy yet lightweight materials such as duralumin and carbon fiber, the gas guzzling conception all set to even better its 602 km/liter (already a record in Spain, in the category of petrol) from previous year. Moreover, the innovative design also allows the vehicle to be powered by other zero emission options such as electric motors and even solar panels.

But rather notching up a green level, another conception from the d’Alcoy Campus of the Universitat Politecnica de Valencia is all set to make its mark in the sustainable scheme of things. This higher budgeted vehicle dubbed as the Urban Concept M112, will be singularly powered by the naturalistic fuel of bio-ethanol.
