A by-product of the Promontorio Studio, this Mora-based, barn-shaped construction is called the Mora River Aquarium. The design and the construction incorporate the bio-diverse paradigm of the Iberian river, and it is embedded in the ecological park. The exterior uses the themonolithic pitched room shed of white pre-cast concrete trusses and ventilation systems, along with water circuits for the insides that cultivate the reduction of cooling energy for the well-being of plant and animal life.
The water for the aquarium is taken from a well on the plot, pumped into a deposit and regenerated after use. Whereas the basement support systems guarantee stability of water temperature, quality control and filtering for each habitat and supply and monitor the water. The authorities make sure that the insides are dark in order to minimize UV impact on the live exhibits, which also allow visitors an uninterrupted detailed tour.
Apart from this, the outdoor space gives a live display of the plants and animals collected and nurtured in the region. As the small municipality in Alentejo region suffered from the scrawny agriculture economy, the whole idea of converting the area into an environmental tourism and leisure market was a good move, and for this reason and more the Mora River Aquarium is a boon!
