California-based Switch Lighting recently announced the world’s first 100 watt-equivalent LED bulb. Switch Lighting also offers the 75 watt-equivalent LED bulb. This is good news for those who have been looking for more energy efficient LED bulbs that are brighter than the currently available LED bulbs which are equivalent to only 60 watt incandescent bulbs.
Switch Lighting says that, just like all the LED bulbs they offer, the 100 watt-equivalent LED bulb will also offer incandescent quality light. This neutral white light is similar to that of a halogen track light. Chief Strategy Officer, Brett Sharenow says the company’s 100 watt-equivalent A19 bulb produces 1700 lumens of light. The bulbs can be mounted in any direction and can be dimmed.
One of the issues with conventional LEDs is that they project light in only one direction. Switch has solved this problem by mounting outward facing LEDs on metal fingers. But the larger problem of overheating of the bulbs has been solved by the company’s trademarked City of Light technology. This technology is an integrated self-cooling system in which a non-toxic liquid filled in the bulb dome dissipates the heat from the surface of the bulb and draws back in to repeat the process. This also allows for maximum brightness while using fewer LED’s.
In accordance with the Cradle to Cradle principle, all parts of the bulb can be recycled, reused or reclaimed. One can return the parts of the bulb to Switch who would recycle it to other uses.
The Switch Lighting LED bulbs will be available later this year but the prices have not been announced yet. The street estimate of $20 to 25 for the 75 watt equivalent Switch LED bulb is the only indication we have. The company has also announced a warm white version of the 100W equivalent bulb in mid to late 2012.
