Eco Factor: Sustainable home built from recycled shipping container.
Architect Jim Poteet has created a unique dwelling space for Stacey Hill in Texas that maximizes the use of environmentally friendly materials inside out. The house, made from a standard 40-foot shipping container, is a playhouse, a garden retreat and a guesthouse.
Jim also added a green roof, floor-to-ceiling glass doors and windows, heating and air conditioning systems, bamboo flooring and wall covering, a small sink and shower and a composting toilet. The structure is placed on a base made from recycled telephone poles.
With large glass doors and windows, the structure receives ample sunlight that reduces energy consumption. The owner hopes that the house can serve as a sustainable prototype for a development of artists’ studios someday.
