Eco Factor: Metallic geodesic spheres with a photovoltaic hemisphere rotate to follow the sun.

Yet another ingenious design makes its presence felt at the 2010 Land Art Generator Initiative Design Competition. The brainchild of Boulos Douaihy, the “Sun Island” is a celebration of the sun’s “aura” on earth. It features a forest of metallic geodesic spheres with a photovoltaic hemisphere that rotate on their axis following the movement of the sun during the day, collecting sunlight and transforming it into electricity that is stored in underground batteries responsible for their rotation.

The spheres behave like self-sufficient sun watches that follow the sun all day and change into mesmerizing illumination at night. The art installation emphasizes the effect of the sun and moon on the sea by exaggerating the tide’s action on the shore’s outline. The land, bound by the highway on one side and open to the sea on the other forms mounds of different levels, which create islands of variables sizes and shapes as tides go up. The beautiful Sun Island makes a perfectly shaded picnic or camping pot during the day, while the night brings an illuminating park ideal for music festivals and star watching.
