Eco Factor: Hybrid vessel powered by renewable energy.

Statue Cruises has announced the launch date for the revolutionary hydrogen hybrid vessel, which will provide ferry services to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. The 1400-horsepower New York Hornblower Hybrid is the world’s first ferry that runs on hydrogen, solar and wind power.

Capable of carrying 600 passengers, the vessel will be equipped with a proton exchange membrane fuel cell, which turns hydrogen into electricity, solar panels, wind turbines and Tier 2 diesel engines, which will be used to cover additional energy needs. The developers, Derecktor Shipyards, also plan to incorporate other environmentally friendly materials during the construction process, which include recycled glass countertops, LED lighting and aluminum wall coverings.
