Eco Factor: UD to reduce its carbon footprint by installing solar photovoltaic system.

In an attempt to reduce its carbon footprint by 20 percent by 2020, the University of Delaware will soon be installing a solar photovoltaic system atop three buildings across the school’s main campus in Newark. The array will be installed by Standard Solar Inc., the East Coast’s premier full-service developer, integrator and installer of solar electric systems. The initial solar array will include more than 2,000 panels to yield an 850-kilowatt solar electric system.

Capable of produce approximately 95,000-kilowatt hours of electricity each year, the array will be jointly developed, owned and operated with its Perpetual Energy Systems LLC. The energy generated is enough to power about 85 average American households. With its sustainable efforts, the University of Delaware has already taken a national leadership role among universities and will continue to do so.
