Sony leads from the front at Climate Savers Summit in Tokyo

There are those cynics who will instantly say after reading this that big boys of world market never do anything for environment until it benefits them. Well, the point is it does not matter what the motive is but at this point it is the end result that matters the most. Environment is in urgent need of being take care of and one should stop being petty and welcome everything and every step taken towards a greener tomorrow. The Climate Savers Summit in Tokyo, organized jointly by Sony and the WWF, saw twelve international companies come together to sign the Tokyo Declaration, which aims to tackle global warming by changing the way that products are designed, made, distributed and recycled.

If you are thinking that that is not huge, then let us cast our mind back to the recent Bali convention that almost ended up without making any substantial gains and had two major world countries, India and China, walk out on it. Sony has been a major initiator during this convention and has pledged its own alliance and encouraged others in taking part in the task of building a cleaner road towards a greener tomorrow. Sony also announced that it was launching its ‘Product, Process, Planet’ initiative, which it claims will make the company more environmentally friendly.

Product’ refers to designing more sustainable gadgets, ‘process’ refers to making the manufacturing process greener and ‘planet’ refers to Sony’s commitment to environmental schemes outside of its normal operations. Sony apparently is very clear about where its priorities lie and what it wants to do. Now people will again cry out saying that Sony did this for publicity and we are allowing it to work by hyping it up. But then, if a good job is getting attention and someone who is doing a decent task is getting benefits from it, then what is wrong in that?

Sony has already come out with sustainable products, notably the ‘odo’ range, which includes a camera, a video camera, a video viewer, headphones and a solar battery. Sony’s BRAVIA TV also won the European Imaging & Sound Association’s (EISA) award for the European Green Television of 2007-2008 for its energy-saving technology. So these are not just hollow promises; not so far, at least. When multi nationals and political parties are doing the right stuff, then it is not only because the world is forcing it on them, but also because they realize that change is imminent and that going against the flow is fatal. That can only be good news for those who care for the planet.
