Solar Rollers: Chelsea Hotel parades solar-powered rolling chairs with splendor

Solar energy is making rapid strides forward and is constantly replacing conventional energy in every aspect of life. The hotel industry has been slowly headed in the green direction too by adopting various strategies that will attract new customers and also help them go green. Atlantic City’s Chelsea hotel is going in the exactly same direction as it is incorporating solar technology in to the rolling chairs that the hotel is pretty famous for. When the Chelsea Hotel opens today, the 330-room hotel won’t be the only new light on the Boardwalk. Three solar-powered rolling chairs, the “solar rollers,” will go into service for guests of the non-gaming hotel.

Designed by Royal Rolling Chairs, the chairs will feature three light-up panels that are visible four to five blocks away. Also included on the chairs will be a dock for iPods and heated seats. Ninety percent of the chairs’ power comes from the sun, with the rest provided by a rechargeable battery that works for as long as 10 days per charge. A thin solar panel lies on top of the canopy. Ted Garry, co-owner of Royal Rolling Chairs, designed the solar roller.

A good deal of research went into the Boardwalk’s first solar-powered roller, which will cost $7,500. A normal chair costs $2,500. The Chelsea will be the first new luxury, non-casino hotel in the resort since the Sheraton Atlantic City Convention Center Hotel opened its doors in 1997. While the research costs of it all tell you once again that solar energy does not come cheap, it also tells you that with a little bit of will and the right attitude one can incorporate green technology in to every aspect of our lives. Hopefully the reminder of the hotel industry will take notice and follow the same green path so that your next holiday trip could be a lot more refreshing!
