It is one thing to be thinking about the planet and green solutions when you are fine and jolly. But it becomes something else when you can look beyond your own personal adversity to make sure that you help the planet in the little way you can, despite being at the receiving end of some tough luck. Not many people on wheelchairs are tempted to thing about providing green solutions for the planet and make sure that they help both themselves and the planet in the process. But Annie Maw is no ordinary person and she has made sure that she lets the world know that we do still care about our home, irrespective of the personal challenges that we face.

The SolaRola Adventure is a rally with a difference. It is a race that will head peacefully through small sleepy villages such as St Mary Bourne and West Chisenbury on its route from central London to the West Country. The High Sheriff of Somerset, Maw is the embodiment of rural charm, hardly the type you’d imagine rally driving. But on Wednesday she will be leading the SolaRola Adventure, a solar-powered event that aims to inspire and educate while raising funds for good causes. The race is an inspiration not only for everyone who are facing personal challenges but also to all those who wish to go green.

Maw will be leading a sextet of solar-powered wheelchairs from Victoria Tower Gardens, Westminster, all the way to the Royal Bath and West Show. Maw will take the course on with her customized Tramper, a cross-country, battery-powered wheelchair with thick tyres that can climb curbs and travel legally on the road at 8mph. It has been customised with a solar panel on the top. The purpose of the race is to make sure that people become more and more aware of alternate resources and make further use of existing solar energy. One can only wish all concerned with the race the very best and it is nice to see two wonderful causes being highlighted in one event like this.
