Solar energy is expected to become cost competitive only by the 2025, according to Dr. Darren Bagnall, an UK academician from the University of Southampton. No doubt, photovoltaic is realizing an astounding growth but it has failed so far to bring dollar to watt ratio comparable to other energy resource.
Second generation of solar energy is relatively cheap which use cheap silicon thin-films deposited on the glass. Further, Bagnall has argued that the third generation would use the benefit of developments in nanotechnologies, photonics, optical metamaterials, plasmonics and semiconductor polymer.
