Eco Factor: Low-cost hearing aid runs on solar energy.

Statistics point out that over 600 million people in the world have a hearing impairment, but only 8 million use hearing aids. Reasons range from the high cost of hearing aids to non-availability of electricity to charge these devices. Howard Weinstein has created a device that can help transform the lives of deprived hearing-impaired individuals living in rural areas of the world.

Dubbed the Solar Ear, the sun-powered hearing aid relies on two rechargeable Ni-Mh 1600mAh batteries that can be charged with a solar charger bundled in the package. The charger needs about six to eight hours of sunlight to fully charge the batteries, which are then good for about one week of use.

In addition to renewable charging capabilities, the batteries have a lifespan of two to three years before needing a replacement. The device has been specifically designed for use in rural areas, and retails for about $100, with a replacement battery costing about $1.
