Eco Factor: Solar powered spinning wheel to produce high-quality hand-spun, hand-woven cloth.
Mahatma Gandhi, the pre-eminent political and spiritual leader who has a major contribution in freeing India from British slavery, always advocated the use of charkha. This symbol of the freedom fight went solar last year when the Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Rural Industrialization developed a unique charkha that could run on renewable energy. Now, the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) is finalizing a project to introduce solar charkhas across the country and produce eco-friendly clothes.
The KVIC in collaboration with the Gandhigram Urja Vikas Sanstha, Amravati and the Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Rural Industrialization, Wardha is undertaking filed trials of the solar-powered charka. The Rs.20,000 ($448.42) charkha comes equipped with solar panels that trap solar energy and stores them in the connected battery. There are plans to introduce 100,000 such charkhas to obtain high-quality hand-spun, hand-woven cloth. The announcement came just a day before the birthday of the Mahatma Gandhi. I believe there couldn’t be a better way to pay tribute to the “Father of the Nation.”
