Shanghai is all set to have an airport so green that it is sure to make many across the globe go green out of shame. The Shanghai Pudong International, is about to go eco-friendly. Now there are plenty of occasions when airports across the planet hit the headlines for all the wrong eco-reasons. They have never been the most eco-friendly places. But then they work with certain limitations, so most often it is understandable. Finally it is nice to see an airport hit the news for taking steps to make itself cleaner, greener & less demanding on energy.
The Pudong airport is all set to get a major over haul, the airport is being designed by some brilliant men in such a way that it saves huge amounts of energy in the years to come. The most impressive & architecturally speaking, grand feature of this construction is the massive skylight system featuring 138 skylights. That would obviously account for most of the energy saved. This design also plans to show the wonderful architecture of the place. There would also be ventilation holes around the terminal & a 32 km river around the airport would be treated & used for the water requirement.
All in all, the project sounds great. A sum exceeding 100 million Yuan will be spent for the whole project, a cost which would be reclaimed within 8 years, with all the energy saved. The project once completed would save 130 million KWH of electricity each year! It is a project that surely should inspire more & I dare say that the roof with all those 138 skylights would look spectacular.
