Science Barge: A novel way of sustainable urban farming

sciencebarge ig4CJ 15699

Taking sustainable urban farming to new heights, the Science Barge is one very different barge that floats on New York’s Hudson river. This barge produces food that’s sufficient for 25-30 people for one full year, in a sustainable way. To get around space constraints, the barge uses vertical farming methods to squeeze out maximum produce. electricity is generated on board with renewable solar and wind power. The solar panels see some useful innovation with them following the sun to become 20 percent more efficient.

To get around, the barge uses bio-diesel but as bio-diesel has a few question mark over it’s sustainability, we cannot give the Science Barge a brownie point for this particular energy source. We think, fuel cells would be a great option for this barge to move around. Rainwater is harvested from the greenhouses’ roofs or alternatively drawn from the river. All this to produce vegetables in a sustainable way with minimal adverse impact on the environment. Overall, the Science Barge is a great attempt at urban sustainable farming that has the potential to make community based sustainable farming very popular.
