Samsung to find eco friendly way to power mobiles with water

samsungs new technology
Technology is all set for a revolution. Mobile phones having become an integral part of our life, a technological break-through to make its usage more cheaper is as best as it can get. Samsung Electo-mechanics has developed a micro-fuel cell and hydrogen generator that requires just water to produce energy, that was unveiled at the 2007 Korea Electronics Show at the Korea International Exhibition Center in Ilsan, Gyeonggi Province. However, Samsung says it would take three years to hit the market. mechanism of fuel cell
Its mechanism of action as explained by Oh Yong-soo, vice president of Samsung Electro-Mechanics’ research center, is as simple as this – when your instrument is switched on, metal and water in the phone reacts to produce hydrogen gas which is then supplied to a specially designed Samsung micro-fuel cell, where it reacts with oxygen in the air to generate power. The micro-fuel cell can generate up to 3 watts of electricity and can power a hand-set for 10 hours which is twice as long as rechargeable batteries. While other fuel-cells use methanol, to harness energy, this Samsung’s micro-fuel cell uses only water. Although the hydrogen cartridge would need to be replaced with a new one every five days, on an average usage of 4 hours per day, Samsung is soon to spur up with a hydrogen cartridge that wouldn’t require replacement but jus refilling with water. I’m sure this technology would have a lot of appreciation and with people awaiting its grand entry, I hope it would all be worthwhile. Via: FarEastGizmos
